Divorce is the death of a relationship, and it can hurt you and prevent you from moving on with your life emotionally and spiritually. We’ve all heard how God hates divorce, and that’s certainly true, but did you know God understands how you feel? He divorced Israel in Jeremiah 3:8. God knows how it feels to have a one-sided relationship where one party is continually faithful and the other is not. Faithfulness not only includes being sexually faithful but relationally faithful as well. It also means respecting the needs of the husband or wife and not abusing him or her in any way.
Chances are you were patient like God was with Israel and put up with a lot of stuff and extended much mercy and forgiveness before you ended the marriage. God is pleased with that and wants you to move forward just like He has moved forward. Christ now looks forward to His bride composed of all those who follow Him and live His way of life (the church) to replace the physical nation Israel. In the same way, I pray you can look forward to new relationships and experiences that will bring joy and help you feel safe as opposed to all the pain and suffering you have had to endure.
Father God, I am divorced or separated and grieving the loss of a relationship. You sent Jesus to minister to us, and Jesus sent God the Holy Spirit to do the same. Please embrace me with Your love, comfort, encouragement and support while You accompany me on my emotional recovery path to break free from this trauma. Help me to be and do all that You have for me to be and do, and help my hurting heart to enjoy the life you’ve given me to live. Thanks for being there for me while Your love makes me whole again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Things to Think, Journal, and Pray About
1. Divorce hurts, and so does separation. Have you cried out to God and shared your pain with Him? If not, can you do it now?
2. Does it help to know that even though God may not change your divorce or separation and the circumstances surrounding it, He can help you change how you think and feel on the path to emotional release from this painful event in your life?
Pastor G and I pray these words can help you break free from the emotional turmoil that divorce and separation bring. Please contact us if you want to share. We are here for you. That’s today’s encouraging word.
