Yesterday, we received a very spiritually mature comment on a post, and so we went to that blog to see what the person is about. Turns out he and his wife have served God as missionaries for thirty years faithfully being and doing what God has for them to be and do in spite of what they perceive as little results achieved for all that time, love and effort. And yet they keep moving forward, praying that this is the year that all those spiritual seeds that have been planted will sprout and result in expanding our spiritual family with new brothers and sisters in Christ.
That led me to think about Pastor G and me. For many years, we have had an internet presence on various blogs and sites with seemingly little impact. Oh, yes, indeed some precious ones have become brothers and sisters in Christ, but it’s certainly not as we had hoped and prayed for their sake and the family’s sake. And yet we, too, persevere, knowing God can use those words He writes through us to make a real difference in people’s lives. Once in a while, I do receive an email thanking me for those words that served as spiritual catalysts to change their walk with God. That’s so much appreciated and encouraging.
The same is true for the spiritual leaders of your congregations. These dedicated men and women of God so hope for indications of spiritual growth and maturity and continue preaching, teaching and praying. Sometimes they get discouraged, too, and God sends them encouragement as only He can.
Individually, sometimes it can be difficult to persevere when there seems to be no or little change in spite of your efforts. Know that God is pleased and sees your labor of love for Him and the kingdom. It’s not a numbers game. It’s about being and doing what God has for each of us to be and do.
Father God, please empower me to be and do what it is that You have for me to be and do regardless of the tangible results that I look for not being there as I have hoped. Grant me the mind and the love to be the kind of witness who makes a difference, an impact in the lives You send across my path. May the seeds planted sprout when it’s Your timing and will.
Father God, please send encouragement and all that those who are in the mission field need. Help them to know that they are not alone or unsupported, and help me to reach out to them in ways that mean a lot to each person. Lead me to those who need regular support and encouragement so that they can continue to be and do what You have for them to be and do. Father God, spiritual leaders are in the mission field, too. Please help me remember them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Things to Think, Pray and Journal About
1. How can you be there for someone you know who is in the mission field? Can you maintain regualr contact?
2. Have you asked God to send those across your path that need encouragement while they faithfully do the work God has given them?
