Those who are familiar with the Bible know that scripture says that David was a man after God’s own heart. Most don’t understand what that means. David made a lot of mistakes. He let his sense of fun do the talking when Saul was pursuing him and happened to relieve himself in a cave where David was hiding. David cut off a piece of Saul’s robe. Then came the time when David let his hormones do the talking when he pursued Bathsheba and caused her husband’s death so he could take her as his wife. How can God’s word call a man who did such things a man after God’s own heart when David did things for himself and not God in these two examples? Clearly, there’s more to the stories.
The key is how David responded after he did these things. In the case of Saul’s robe, it didn’t take long before David realized that no matter how he felt about Saul or if he was having fun in a mischievous way, the fact was that Saul was God’s anointed and that fact was worthy of respect and not ridicule. David changed or, in biblical terms, he repented. What was more important to David was the way God looked at things, and he saw that there was a conflict and chose to align his ways with God’s. Nathan the prophet was God’s instrument in confronting David with his wrong choices regarding Bathsheba and Uriah. David could have responded in a number of ways, but he chose to see how wrong he was in what he did and how he did it and turned back to God so that David could walk with Him again.
David was a man after God’s own heart because he chose to follow Him and live the way God wanted him to. When David went astray, as any of us can do, when he was aware of his wrong choices and actions, he owned them and made things right with God, renewing and restoring their relationship. David’s priority was his relationship with God, and that’s what made him a man after God’s own heart.
So, are you a man or woman after God’s own heart? After you make choices that lead you away from God, what do you do? Do you continue further down the path of wrong choices or do you stop and align yourself with God and His way of life thus restoring your relationship with Him? There’s nothing that can separate you from God’s love except your wrong choices. He waits for all of us to return to Him and the way of life that brings physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. And yes, He waits for us to rely on Him for everything just like little children rely on their parents. He waits for us to return the love He so freely showers on us. Will you receive that love and be a person after God’s own heart?
That’s today’s encouraging word. Pastor G and I pray that today is the day you make that spiritual love connection no matter what wrong choices you have made. God can give you whatever help and empowerment you need to change and walk alongside Him. May all of us choose to be people after His own heart.
