Do You Sow Discord or Unity?

Today, God directed me to Proverbs 6:19, which says God hates those who sow discord among brethren. God has made me very aware of how much He loves unity and how much He hates division.

What does it mean to sow discord among brethren? The first thought that comes to mind are those that love to plant doubts about what they hear from the pulpit. It could be that there is resentment regarding the spiritual leader or even resentment regarding how God wants us to live as opposed to what some think are personal rights that God should not interfere with. An example of the latter would be those who favor same sex relationships even when God calls them an abomination. The word for abomination in Strong’s Concordance means destestable. The very same word is used in Proverbs 6:16, where scripture says that the things that follow are things God hates and finds detestable. God hates it when brethren sow discord. He actually finds it detestable.

Another way brethren sow discord is a little more subtle than the above example. Jesus began one church, and many denominations emerged from that one organization. All denominations are mixtures of spiritual truth, spiritual error and doctrines of men. Pastor G and I don’t worry about the differences as long as we can all agree as to Who we follow and have in common: Jesus. Jesus will fix all spiritual error and misunderstanding when He returns. What is disconcerting is the very real hostility and lack of love towards brothers and sisters in Christ I have seen on another site God has us frequent.

This kind of discord sows pride in those who practice it. Each denomination, from Catholic to Baptist to Methodist thinks those in their fellowship have all the spiritual answers and tend to disrespect and even attempt to mock and belittle those that are God’s but believe differently from the way they do. Brothers and sisters, Jesus is not pleased with this attitude. When He returns, He will reunite us all into the church He began and help us separate His truth from our error. Until then, He wants us to dwell together in unity like Psalm 133 so beautifully details.

Pastor G and I pray that if you have been sowing discord that you stop immediately and instead ask God to help you love your spiritual family. We pray that you will spread His love and unity from this moment on. After all, scripture says that “by this shall all men know that you are His disciples, that you love one another.” Walking in love and unity is walking in peace and all the fruits of the spirit.
